October 15, 2008 As Wayne Parker's friends launch latest attack, moderator of forum already calls attack untrue HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – – The same day that two Huntsville television stations refused to run a misleading attack ad by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), the group launched another untrue attack on Congressional candidate Parker Griffith. A press release from the NRCC attempted to mislead reporters about comments made on the threat of Radical Islam and misused the quotes from Griffith so boldly that even the moderator of the forum where Griffith made the remarks no longer recognized them. Mr. David Carpenter, who was the moderator of the Colbert/Lauderdale Baptist Association Forum, released the following statement, showing that the latest attack is again based on lies. "I was the moderator for the Colbert/Lauderdale Baptist Association Forum on September 15th and I am shocked by the misuse of this quote from that event. I sat right between Wayne Parker and Dr. Griffith during the program and thought both did an excellent job discussing issues of faith and their views. The response that is being used against Parker Griffith was part of his comment in a longer discussion of whether radical Islam was a threat to our Christian faith. I was there when he said these quotes and can tell you that they have been taken out of context and it is unfortunate that anyone would misrepresent the truth in this way," said Carpenter. Griffith expressed disappointment that the Parker Campaign would continue to throw mud and sling lies, instead of talking about the economy and other issues that matter to North Alabama families. "It's the same old story," said Griffith. "One attack doesn't stick, so Wayne Parker attempts to use another lie. This quote was part of a discussion of whether or not radical Islam was a threat to our Christian beliefs. Obviously, radical Islam, the violence it encourages and those nations that support it are a threat to our national security that must be faced aggressively. I don't think you'll find anyone that will disagree with that." However, Griffith did not back down from his comments on the importance of strong Christian faith. "I said it at the forum and I will say it again that if we are strong in our Christian faith and true to our values, we won't let radical Islam destroy our principles and our way of life." The forum took place on September 15th, yet Wayne Parker and his friends did not bring up this false charge up until a month later. It is notable that when the forum was originally covered by the Florence Times Daily, no mention about the comments taken out of context by the NRCC appeared, which supports Griffith's assertion that everyone in the room understood the context of his remarks. In addition to attack ads by Wayne Parker and the false ads by the NRCC that were pulled from the air, Parker Griffith has also seen attacks from Freedom's Watch, a shadowy group founded by Las Vegas casino baron Sheldon Adelson that has been criticized by the Alabama Christian Coalition who said that Freedom's Watch "does not share our values" and called on them to "stay out of Alabama politics." Parker Griffith is running as a pro-defense, pro-life Democrat that will follow in the tradition of Bud Cramer's independent leadership. |
